The port city of Fremantle is located at the mouth of the Swan River which lies on a series of limestone hills. It’s around 20 km away and approximately 25 minutes from the Perth Metropolitan region. The city has an average population of 30,000 people. Fremantle is named after Captain Charles Howe Fremantle of the English Royal Navy and became a city in 1929.
Its harbour was deepened for commercial shipping the following decade. Since it is the major port in Western Australia, Fremantle Harbour is the entry point for the many cargo ships, ferries, cruise ships, and leisure vessels that berth at the port in the Inner Harbour. When it comes to Western site and Australia’s most significant cultural attraction, Fremantle Prison was one of the world’s largest remaining convict prisons. It has been closed for some time, however it has been recognised as a World Heritage Site. Organised visitor tours are run regularly to allow people to view the site and experience the convict living conditions.

The Swan River Colony’s Round House was Fremantle’s first permanent public structure.
